Arènes Emile Bilhau

Built between 1937 and 1939, the Saint-Gilles Arena is unusual in that it was built in reinforced concrete, an unlikely material for this type of construction, but one that was popular at that time. Only the main entrance is built from cut stone. The arena can accommodate up to two thousand people and is still in use today. Here, you can see Camargue races, bullfights during the Fishing and Apricot Fairs, and various other bullfighting and equine shows. It was here that the famous Saint-Gilles resident Palmyre Camacho (1929-2019), one of France’s few female bullfighters, rose to fame in 1950 by bullfighting in a skirt.

In 1993, the arena was named after Emile Bilhau, in tribute to the Saint-Gilles “manadier”. A “manade” is a herd of semi-wild horses and/or cattle, typical of the Camargue region. He was the first winner of the “Biou d’Or”, a trophy awarded to the best Camargue bull racers. He received the prize in 1954 for his stockbreeding. He was also at the origin of the “taureau-piscine”, a bullfighting practice that is immensely popular in Saint-Gilles.

Die Arena von Saint-Gilles wurde zwischen 1937 und 1939 gebaut, und zwar aus Stahlbeton, einem Baustoff, der für diese Art Bauwerke eher ungewöhnlich, damals aber in vollem Aufschwung war. Nur das Tor am Haupteingang besteht aus Naturstein. Die Arena bietet bis zu 2.000 Menschen Platz und wird heute noch genutzt. Hier finden Stierrennen (Courses Camarguaises) statt, während des Pfirsisch- und Aprikosenfests (Féria de la Pêche et de l’Apricot) auch Stierkämpfe, sowie verschiedene andere Veranstaltungen mit Stieren und Pferden. 1950 sorgte hier die berühmte Stierkämpferin Palmyre Camacho (1929-2019), eine der wenigen französischen Toreras, für Aufsehen, als sie Stierkämpfe im Rock austrug.

Seit 1993 trägt die Arena den Namen des Stierzüchters Emile Bilhau aus Saint-Gilles. Dieser war der erste Preisträger des « Biou d’Or », einer Trophäe für die besten Stiere des Camargue-Rennens. Emile Bilhau erhielt 1954 den Preis für seine gesamte Zucht. Er war auch der Begründer der Stierspiele « Taureau-piscine », die seither in Saint-Gilles eine feste Institution sind.

Las arenas de Saint-Gilles fueron construidas entre 1937 y 1939. Tienen la particularidad de estar hechas de hormigón armado, un material poco utilizado para este tipo de construcciones, pero que se usaba mucho en aquella época. Solo la puerta de la entrada principal está construida de piedra de sillería. Estas arenas pueden albergar hasta 2.000 personas y siguen funcionando. Aquí tienen lugar corridas camarguesas, corridas para la Feria del melocotón y del albaricoque, así como diversos espectáculos taurinos y ecuestres. La famosa Palmyre Camacho (1929-2019, nacida en Saint-Gilles) fue una de las pocas toreras francesas y se dio a conocer aquí en 1950, toreando con falda.

Desde 1993, las arenas llevan el nombre de Emile Bilhau en homenaje al manadier, o guardián de manada, de Saint-Gilles. En 1954, Emile Bilhau fue el primero en ganar el «Biou d’Or» por su ganado, trofeo que se concede a los mejores toros de corridas camarguesas. También participó a la creación de las piscinas de toros, una de las tradiciones ineludibles de Saint-Gilles.

Apparse tra il 1937 e il 1939, le arene di Saint-Gilles hanno la particolarità di essere state costruite in cemento armato, materiale poco frequente per questo tipo di costruzione, ma di gran moda in questo periodo. Soltanto la porta dell’ingresso principale è in pietra. Le arene possono accogliere fino a 2.000 persone e sono tuttora agibili. Vi si possono vedere corse camarghesi, corride durante la Fiera della Pesca e dell’Albicocca e diversi altri spettacoli taurini ed equini. È proprio qui che la celebre Palmyre Camacho (1929-2019), originaria di Saint-Gilles, una dei rari toreri-donna francesi, si è fatta notare nel 1950 toreando in gonna.

Dal 1993 le arene portano il nome di Emile Bilhau, in onore del famoso manadier di Saint-Gilles, che fu il primo vincitore del « Biou d’Or », trofeo per i migliori tori da corsa camarghesi. Emile Bilhau ricevette il premio nel 1954 per tutto il suo allevamento, e fu anche l’inventore del toro-piscina, che ancora oggi è un’istituzione imprescindibile a Saint-Gilles.
